Reading and Phonics
Intent: Reading lies at the heart of the curriculum at Kemsing Primary. We are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong readers and we believe reading is key for academic success. By the time children leave Kemsing, they are competent readers who can recommend books to their peers, have a thirst for reading a range of genres including poetry, and participate in discussions about books, including evaluating an author’s use of language and the impact this can have on the reader. They can also read books to enhance their knowledge and understanding of all subjects on the curriculum, and communicate their research to a wider audience.
Progression of Skills & Knowledge in Reading
Children are taught to read through Twinkl Phonics which is a systematic synthetic phonics programme that has been validated by the Department for Education. The scheme provides a coherently planned sequence of lessons that supports the effective teaching of phonics within EYFS, KS1 and, where appropriate, KS2. Please see below the progression map for phonics and a whole scheme overview.

VIPERS Reading Progression
We have daily guided reading comprehension sessions from Year 2 onwards to ensure that children read age-related texts and answer V.I.P.E.R.S (Vocabulary, Inference, Predict, Explain, Retrieve and Summarise / Sequence) as our method to explicitly teach each skill. These whole class or group reading comprehension sessions are used as a powerful tool to allow all children to make progress in reading and provide regular and supportive opportunities for children to encounter engaging texts that will resonate with their interests and capture their imagination. Carefully graded questions allow for children to develop their comprehension skills at an appropriate level.
Please see below VIPERS reading skills for each year group.
