At Kemsing, we strive to ensure that all of our children become competent and confident readers.
Reading is taught daily in each year group through a combination of phonics lessons, shared class reading, guided group sessions and 1:1 reading with teachers, teaching assistants and volunteers.
Children in Reception and Key Stage One follow the DfES Letters and Sounds program. This is a daily approach to teaching phonics in which individual letters and sounds are blended to form words.
We have a good range of reading materials which are colour coded to ensure that the books can be closely matched to the children’s individual reading abilities. These books offer an expansive range of fiction and non-fiction texts in order to further develop the breadth of children’s reading. Once they finish the reading scheme we encourage them to become independent readers and choose their own books from classroom and school libraries.
