Reading and Phonics

At Kemsing, we strive to ensure that all of our children become competent and confident readers.

Reading is taught daily in each year group through a combination of phonics lessons, shared class reading, guided group sessions and 1:1 reading with teachers, teaching assistants and volunteers.

Children in Reception and Key Stage One follow a systematic, synthetic phonics programme which compliments the progression laid out in letters and sounds. It ensures full coverage of phonic sounds, tricky words and essential skills to support children to become confident and fluent readers and writers.

At Kemsing we use Collins Big Cat reading scheme. The scheme delivers effective phonics with fully decodable books, expertly aligned to Letter and Sounds.

Teachers ensure that the books that children are reading are matched to their individual reading abilities. These books offer an expansive range of fiction and non-fiction texts in order to further develop the breadth of children’s reading.

Once children finish the reading scheme we encourage them to become independent readers and choose their own books from classrooms and school libraries.
